Spencer will be defending his European Super Bantamweight Title against French challenger Fabrice Benichou at the Lee Valley Leisure Centre in Edmonton, North London on Saturday 31st Janaury 1998.

Benichou who has twice held the world title, is regarded by Spencer's manager Jess Harding as being "The Omen's" toughest opponent yet. However there is great confidence in the Oliver camp.

Jess said "Spencer has been in great form during sparring sessions with Coventry based super featherweight Richard Evatt, the hardest hitting pound-for-pound fighter in Britain". "He's left Evatt demoralised as he slips the punches and counters".
